BENJAMIN BRITTEN The Rose in a Mystery, where is it found?

The Birds Is it anything true? Does it grow upon ground?

When Jesus Christ was four years old, It was made of Earth’s mould, but it went

The angels brought him toys of of gold, from Men’s eyes,

Which no man ever bought or sold. And its place is secret, and shut in the skies.

And yet with these he would not play, T shall look on thy loveliness, Mother of He made Him small fowl out of clay, mine.

And bless’d them till they flew away:

Tu creasti Domine But where was it formerly? Which is the spot

Jesus Christ, Thou child so wise, That was blest in it once, though now it is

Bless mine hands and fill mine eyes, not?

And bring my soul to paradise. It is Galilee’s growth; it grew at God’s will And broke into bloom upon Nazereth Hill.

BENJAMIN BRITTEN

Rosa Mystica I shall keep time with thee, Mother of mine.

(from Ad majorem Dei gloriam)

Tell me the name now, tell me its name: In the Gardens of God, in the daylight The heart guesses easily, is it the same? divine, Mary, the Virgin, well the heart knows, Find me a place by thee, Mother of mine, She is the Mystery, she is that Rose.

T shall come home to thee, Mother of mine. Does it smell sweet, too, in that holy place? Sweet unto God, and the sweetness is grace;

Is Mary that Rose then? Mary the tree? The breath of it bathes the great heaven But the Blossom, the blossom there, who above, can it be? In the grace that is charity, grace thatis...

Who can her Rose be? It could be but One: Christ Jesus our Lord, her God and her Son. Mother of mine.

In the Gardens of God, in the daylight Text by Gerard Manley Hopkins divine, Show me thy son, Mother of mine,
