To the Buying Printer

HIS American Line Type Book shows specimens of the late^ and be^ in type designs ; the faces popular with all leading advertisers and the large buyers of printing. One reason for the increasing demand for American Type and which, by the way, makes it The Best Type is the fa(5t that the designs are brought out in Families. One of the popular American Line Families is known as the Cheltenham Family, consisting of Cheltenham Old^le, CheltenhamWide, Cheltenham Italic, Cheltenham Bold, Cheltenham Bold Italic, Cheltenham Bold Condensed, Cheltenham Bold Condensed Italic, and the late^ addition, Cheltenham Outline.

Other notable American Type Families are the Century Expanded Series, Globe Gothics, Florentines, Copperplate Gothics, Alternate Gothics, Jensons, and the "Post" Family. Many of these are shown for the fir^ time in this American Line Type Book.

In addition to the diversified range of type faces shown in this book, the printer will also find the mo^ attractive line of Decorative Material ever presented. In Brass Rule the selection offered is the larger ever shown, both in plain faces and distinctive faces, which are unexcelled for advertising display.

- Everything required for the mo^ complete printing office outfit can be selected from the pages of this Type Book, and the price li^ of Wood Goods, Printing Material and Printing Machinery will be found an authentic Purchaser's Guide for Printers.

For a large selec5tion of both plain and ornamental type faces not show^n in this Specimen Book, printers are referred to the I 900 Desk Book, a copy of which w^as placed in every printing office in the country.

Every face on Common Line will line at the bottom with all faces cast on the same body and line ; and by using point leads each size will line with all other sizes ca^ on either Common, Title or Script Lines. This explanation also applies to Title and Script Lines.

The example on this page illu^rates pradlically the 6. 8, 10, 12. 14, 18, 24, 30, 36, 48, 54, 60 and 72 Point sizes of Lining Jenson Condensed, aligned with point justification. To better illu^rate the system, one-point brass rule was used in aligning the thirteen sizes each fine line representing a one- point lead.

I. American Common Line the line com- mon to the majority of faces.

1 1 . American TiTLE LlXI^] includes type faces in cap fonts or with short descenders.

III. American e)rr /a/ cX*>/^^ embraces Script and other faces with long descenders.

The American Lining System is the perfedlion of the systems adopted by the foundries of this country. The value of the American Lining System is here exemplified in the use, IV/tAlOUt Justification, of different type faces ca^ on the American Common Line a feature that must commend itself to Printers for its sim- plicity and practical use.
