PREFACE.

One of the most striking features of the Twentieth Century Librarian's work is its diversity. The Library field is so large and the different branches so intricately connected, that it is no easy task for him to keep in touch with the latest developments in library science, the necessity and importance of which cannot be over-estimated.

To the modern Librarian economy of time and concentration of resources are vital.

The most important medium for the dissemination of technical informa- tion concerning Librarianship is undoubtedly the professional press and associated with it, tlie Transactions of the various Bibliograpliical Societies, the two enabling the Librarian to acquire that intimate knowledge of current progress so essential to effective and efficient administration. Certain it is that the remarkable advance in Library work which has been made during the past thirty-three years would not have been possible but for these channels of intercommunication for the exchange of new ideas or the recording of fresh experience.

Students of special subjects constantly require to collect all available information concerning the question in which they are interested. Reference to past work is indispensable, for it not only serves to indicate what has already been accomplished and thus prevents much waste of time and energy in reinvestigating already explored paths, but what is more important, the failure of others, frequently suggests improvements, that without such knowledge would never be realized.

The enormous and constantly increasing stream of professional period- ical literature renders it impossible for any one individual to keep in touch with all that is likely to be of service to him. Even with the annual indexes and other aids, hours of wearying search are often required to unearth an article, the general subject or the most valuable details of which, are more strongly impressed upon the memory than the title under which it is indexed. It is indeed difficult for the student of library economy to obtain the full value of the professional literature ^Firstly, because at present he has no means of ascertaining expeditiously what work has been done or what articles published which may be of value to him ; and secondly because he cannot readily find again what he may have already consulted.

Mr. Frederick Teggart states in a note attached to his article on " Library literature in England and the United States during the Nineteenth Century," Libvavy Journal, Vol. 26, 1891, pp. 257-261.

" It is to be regretted that with all the facilities of College courses " and Library Schools, the elementary necessity of a Bibliography of " Library Economy has not been supplied 'There have been various "attempts The ' Report on Libraries' {1876) pp. 733-744, and Mr. " E. R. Nicholson's ' List of some leading subjects connected with " Library formation and management,' published in the Transactions '^ of the First Conference of Librarians (1877) PP- 208-211, 248-249, and "also in the Library Journal, Vol. i, pp. 399-401 are now very inade- " quate." Mr. Teggart in concluding his valuable resume of the Literature of Library Economy, says :

" At the conclusion of the first half century of modern democratic " Library movement, we find the profession with a very much en- " larged experience, with a great body of valuable but undigesteil "literature, and awaiting three important pieces of work: (i) A " Bibliography of Library Science ; (2) A Descriptive appraisal of " our Library resources : (3) A Systematic summing up of our pro- " fessional experience and knowledge."

4 PREFACE

Mr. W. D. Johnston, of the Library of Congress, in his " Suggestions for a Year-Book of I.il)iary Literature," Library Journal, \'ol. 29, 1904, pp. 126-127, writes as follows :—

" The first requis-ite of the progress of Library science, as of all " sciences, is a permanent and systematic record. This has been " recognised in the establishment of numerous Journals devoted to " Library interests and Bibliography, but with all these, there is no " publication devoted to Library literature and suggests the com- " pilation of a Classified List of books and articles in Magazines *• relating to Libraries and Library administration."

This has to some extent been met by the publication in 1905 of" Library Work : a quarterly Bibliography and digest of Library Literature," by the H. W. Wilson Co., Minneapolis, U.S.A., and Mr. Arthur E. Bostwick, Ph.D., Chief Librarian of the St. Louis Public Library, with the select list of references appended to his work, entitled " The American Public Library," published by Appleton & Co., April, 1910, pp. 394; and on this side of the Atlantic by the " Guide to Librarianship," by Mr. James Duff Brown, Chief Librarian of Islington.

The present volume is the result of the first systematic attempt to index the whole range of literature in the English language published in the Library periodical press, indexing as it does, every article relating to Library history and administration, Library Associations, Commissions, Conferences and Schools, Biographical notices of Librarians, Classification, Cataloguing, Ofilice routine, Mechanical accessories and aids, Heating, Lighting, \'entilation and the various contributory branches of knowledge ; Binding, Paper, Museum and Lecture work ; Practical and Historical Printing ; Book selection and the various aids thereto ; Bibliography, Methods of Publishing, Copyright and the numerous subjects either directly or indirectly connected with the work of National, Public, Proprietary and Private Libraries and Museums.

Undoubtedly many of the best things that have been written on the various branches of the profession are hidden away in the back numbers of periodicals, and the compiler hopes this volume will render them more easily accessible, and thus prove a valuable help to every Bibliothecal student.

In the compilation of this Bibliography, the original articles appearing,' in the various professional journals have been consulted and the entries made from the contents of the papers, not merely from their headings, the first and last pages being given in order to show the scope of the paper.

Recognising the value of such a Bibliography to Librarians and students of Librarianship, in November, 1907, the compiler offered to present the rights of the European sales of the volume to the Library Association of the United Kingdom, but owing to insufficient support, the Council were unable to proceed with its publication, and as there appeared to be no prospect of the work being produced under the auspices of the Association in the immediate future, this offer had reluctantly to be withdrawn and the publication undertaken as a private commercial venture.

The size of the work has materially mcreased since the Council of the Library Association first considered it, as it now comprises over 15,000 entries arranged in a classified logical sequence, under i,goo subject headings, entries being placed in order of date to present the subject in its historical aspect ; the whole being preceded by an elaborate and detailed scheme of classification, specially prepared for the work, and an alphabetical subject index comprising over 2,500 direct references. It thus forms a Classified Bibliography to all articles appearing in the professional publications during the period 1876-1909.

It is a recognised fact that many Library Committees and Librarians, owing to the lack of suitable information, waste much time and money in finding suitable places to obtain their supplies To overcome this a repre- sentative selection of firms specialising in ^supplies used in Library

PREFACE

administration are entered under the various subject heads, immediately followinjf the literature indexed. By this means hints may be gained where various kinds of books may be procured, where books and periodicals may be bound, where Library furniture, stationery, records and supplies of every description may be obtained, the whole forming a permanent Directory of Library Furnishers, whether in fixtures, stationery, books or other ac- cessories.

Notwithstanding the enormous task connected with its compilation, the compiler does not seek to make profit from the sale of the publication and the price has therefore been fixed as low as possible in order to bring the work within the reach of all engaged in Library work.

It should be distinctly understood that the Classification Scheme attached, although fairly comprehensive, does not aspire to cover the whole field of Librarianship and its allied topics, its object being merely to provide a classified key to the subjects represented in the body of the work. Where the key to the classification may not clearly indicate the position of special topics, the full alphabetical subject index should be consulted. It ^s hoped this will meet the needs of all inquirers.

Everything consistent with clearness has been done to insure condensa- tion and brevity with reference to the various periodicals and journals indexed. For key to the abbreviations, see overleaf.

The compiler desires to acknowledge the encouragement during the progress of the work from the numerous letters of appreciation he has received from American Librarians.

He is indebted to Professor Aksel G. S. Josephson, of Chicago, for the references to articles appearing in the Proceedings of the Bibliographical Society of America, and the Year-Book of the Bibliographical Society of Chicago; and also to Doctor H. M. Barlow, of the Library of the Royal C^iollege of Physicians, for those articles published in the official organ of the Association of Medical Librarians. To both of these gentlemen, he desires to tender an expression of his sincere thanks.
