ADMINISTRATION ^ 8

cledication

With a sure purpose born of four years' living at Indiana, the graduating class of 1952 approaches its goal, to join the ranks of those vitally important persons, the teachers of Pennsylvania.

It is to the Senior class, the future teachers of the commonwealth who stand ready to begin their chosen work, that we dedicate this book.

May you accept it as our pledge to you that all the vivid memories you cherish of your Indiana days will continue from year to year. We look forward to the time when we, too, will become a part of the college tradition, when we will join you in the schools of Pennsylvania.

administration

For more than three quarters of a century, Indiana has been preparing teachers for the public schools of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Throughout the years this has been an honored and important undertaking. The roots of our democratic system have been nurtured and strengthened by our public school system. The public recognition of the impor- tance of education in a democratic society has ele- vated teaching to a professional status of great importance in our society.

The future of the nation, and indeed of the world, depends today upon an educated citizenry. The challenges confronting our democratic way of life have been, and will be in the future, successfully met by our educational system. The preservation of democracy in America can be credited largely to the

loyalty and selfless service of the teachers in our public schools. The future of America can only be assured if we prepare well-qualified teachers to inculcate in the youth of our land the democratic ideals for which America stands.

Teaching in the future assumes an even greater role in the destiny of mankind. Teachers will be called upon in the years ahead, not only to preserve democracy throughout the world, but to bring sup- pressed peoples everywhere the "truth that shall make them free". We know that only in an enlight- ened world can there be peace and stability which all men covet.

Indiana is one of the chief institutions in the country whose sole responsibility is to prepare young men and women to be teachers of tomorrow, equipped not only to preserve the tenets of democracy at home but to carry the light of knowledge and truth throughout the world. .

Guiding the college careers of future Pennsylvania teachers is a job that re- quires the wisdom of experience, abil- ity to make decisions, and coopera- tion. The administrative staff not only must be familiar with the individual records of students, but also must handle finances and public relations of the college. Through all this, their personal interest gives us confidence that we are on the right track toward taking our places in the schools of the commonwealth.

KEITH SCHOOL

What is teaching like? What does a teacher need to know? How will I know what to expect of children? Is the teaching pro- fession a wise choice for me? Students, looking forward to teaching as a profession, come to Indiana seeking an under- standing of these problems. The John A.M. Keith School provides opportunities for exploratory experiences under guided direc- tion. With the help of capable supervisors, students gain experi- ence as participants in an actual school situation, as well as knowledge through their observation of classes.

Full-time responsible stude_nt teaching translates into teaching power the sum-total of knowledge and experience gained throughout a student's entire college life. The facilities and staff of Keith School are prepared to insure the best in pro- fessional experiences for these future teachers of Pennsylvania.

Director of Student Teaching and Placement: John E. Davis.

Keith School Supervising Teachers: Miss Jane S. Mervine, Robert Cronouer, John E. Davis (Director), Miss Lois Blair, Earl S. Hoenstine, Dr. John Sahli (Princi- pal of Junior High), Miss Kathryn O'Toole.

Keith School Supervising Teachers: D. O. Lott, Miss Lois Anderson, Miss Martha Zimmerman, John E. Davis (Director), Mrs, Elfa M. Porter, Miss Helen McLean, Miss Alice St, Clair, Mrs. Mary Swarts,

With each stroke of the chalk and each spoken thought, we

as teachers will mold the mental, physical, and moral fiber of the future leaders of the commonwealth.

senior

Next year at this time, most of us will be teaching in schools all over Pennsylvania. But we have much to remember about our years at Indiana, dear memories that will recur again and again as we go about our work each day. When we get together, we'll re- call the class prom, "Fall Festival," which was held September 29 in recreation hall. We'll rehash the class outing and picnic, but most of all, we'll remember Swing Out, which was our special weekend in May.

Making our class the best that ever attended Indiana State Teachers College was the major project of the juniors this year. Having attained the long-awaited goal of Junior Standing, we are ready to enter our final year of prepara- tion in becoming Pennsylvania teachers. Activities, besides several business meetings, included winter frolics, competitive bowling within the class, and the traditional prom in April. The annualouting in October with the antics of Jules Filcik in the suitcase race and the pie eating of John Pancella will not be forgotten.

Conducting freshman customs is the heritage of us sopho- mores, and we've never yet failed to think of appropriate antics. Although we spent most of our time this year pre- paring for Junior Standing, we took time out to enjoy the class prom, "Out of This World," November 17, and an outing at the college lodge in March.

student council

As the coordinating body for campus organizations and extra-curricular activities, Student Council has for its main purpose to provide an intelligent student government. We worked together in carrying on freshman customs, the Mellowmen concert for the band uniform fund drive, and "It's Laughter We're After." In December, the council held an open meet- ing for which the students had asked. A committee chairman, Jesse Hornyak, has been appointed to publicize student council, bringing it and the student body into closer and more effective contact. Officers are James Stewart, president; Auleen Thomas, vice- president; Jan Schnell, secretary.

The W.C.A. is the governing body for all resident women. The council is composed of a president from each hall in John Sutton and Clark and from the women's cottages. This year we sponsored a Halloween party, faculty frolics, two open meetings, the installation of new officers, and a survey of student needs and desires for the dorms. Officers are Anne Thompson, president; Vivian Gall, vice-president; Lois Kuhns, secretary, and Luana Knavel, treasurer.

With a larger group than ever, the Non-Resident Women's League con- tinued to prove itself a worthwhile campus organization. The project for the year was the redecorating of the downstairs lunchroom. With Miss Faust as an adviser, we participated in two lodge outings and Christmas and Easter parties. Officers are: Dorothy Lingenfelter, president; Mary Basso, vice-president; and Christine Vanity, secretary-treasurer.

Intelligent acceptance of responsibility and wise use of freedom by dorm residents is our goal as members of the governing board for resident women. In our weekly meetings with Miss Faust, we discuss means of helping resident women live together cooperatively. We also receive complaints and handle infractions of dorm rules. OfFicers are Marilyn Hillegas, chair- man; Sally Sheeren, secretary; Anne Thompson, president of W.C.A.; and two representatives of the sophomore, junior, and senior classes.

Members of Social Life try each year to provide the extra things that make campus life smoother. Out of our treasury come subscriptions to magazines and newspapers for reception lounge. We finance weekday and Saturday dances, all-school teas, and the full-length films that are shown throughout the year. This year we worked with the WCA to sponsor the freshman party, bought chairs for Lewis House, and maintained equipment for the men's lounge.

Between the covers of a yearbook is captured for all time a vital chain of incidents that links the past with the present, and gives promise of a successful future. Each event of a college year influences the personality and enriches the experience of the individual student participant. The 1952 OAK strives that none of us shall forget the satisfaction of work well done, the moments of decision, and the hours of pleasure that have been ours. To assure that goal, we pre- sent you in the personal way that you will best remember.

committee

We are a committee of six faculty members and nine students responsible for the religious activities of the college. Two of our activities are planning and arranging for the monthly vespers and the Spiritual Enrichment Week program. "Faith the answer?" was the theme of the week. The movie "One God" was shown in February. We also coordinate activities of the YWCA, YMCA and the college church clubs. Chairmen of the committee are Marilyn Wolfe and Dr. Dorcas Hail.

Associated with the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, a nationwide organiza- tion, our group successfully completed its second year on campus. Main octivities included a fall conference at Seneca Hills, several Sunday morning retreats, and parties at Halloween and Christmas. Closing the year was a fellowship breakfast at the college lodge. Officers are Gretchen Tress, president; Jane Hoyman, vice-president; Donna Gerner, secretary; Tom McMillan, treasurer; Hazel Ober, adviser.

men's glee club

Seventy members strong this year, the men's glee club embarked on a concert tour of area high schools in February. On campus, concerts were held at Home- coming, vespers,Thanksgiving convocation and in Fisher Auditorium, February 13. The traditional "Boar's Head Carol" was performed at the Christmas dance. Charles A. Davis directs the club, otsisted by Wilbert King, student director.

women's glee club

string orchestra

Under the direction of Jerome Landsman, the string orchestra worked to give string players in the college an opportunity to become acquainted with music composed for a small chamber group. Using selections mostly by 17th and 18th century composers,we played for the Christmas vespers and during Spiritual Enrichment Week in March.

college symphony orchestra

Under the direction of Lawrence Stitt, the symphony orchestra presented a concert for the Central Western Pennsylvania Teachers Conference in the fall. We broadcast over WDAD, played for convocation, and gave our formal spring concert in connection with high school band day, March 7. Baccalaureate and Commencement completed our year.

Playing in an organized conference for the first time in the school's history, Coach Sam Smith's varsity gridders ended their season in November with the best record an Indiana football team has been able to put together in the post-war era.

Though their 5-3-1 result should have stood them in better stead, they wound up the first year of conference play tied with Edinboro for ninth place. They were, however, the only team in the league whose schedule was composed com- pletely of conference rivals.

On Memorial field, the Big Indians were far superior to what they were on the road. They didn't lose a game on the home lot but met with

serious trouble every time they took the road. Be- sides the three losses, which all occurred on enemy ground, Edinboro succeeded in first marring the bid for a perfect season with a 20-20 tie there midway through October.

The best-played game of the season was the Homecoming Day tussle with California. The fighting Warriors thrilled the overflow crowd by coming from behind to defeat the highly-touted Vulcans, 13-6, thus depriving them of an unde- feated season.

Five seniors. Bill Joseph, Ron Huber, Al Barnett, Joe Caletri and Jack McGlaughlin, brought their college careers to an end in fine style.

basketball

Coach Regis McKnight's Indian dribblers this year put together a nine and eleven mark in meeting a tough 20-game schedule that included top-notch teams from the STC conference and top-flight independent schools from the area. A lot of experienced material was back to build upon, but the loss of three titans Watson, Bailey and DeLise left the team with an undesirable height disadvantage. The Braves found conference opposition far superior to exhibition material, winning only three from and losing nine to STC rivals. Chet Gurski, transferee from N.C. State, paced the scoring race from his pivot post, while guard Skip Hays was runner-up. The ineligibility of guard Tex George during the first semester and numerous injuries, most notable that which kept high- scoring Ray Morgan on the shelf the major part of the campaign, hurt chances considerably.

baseball

With little experienced help back from a good 1950 season, Sam Smith's varsity batters played out their 11 -game schedule to a five and six record, recording four of the five victories on Memorial field. Injuries to key hurlers Jace Swauger and Peter Palmer didn't help the moundstaff, and the catch- ing and infield posts were riddled with graduations. Probably the biggest win of the season was a 4-1 beating handed the Duquesne Dukes. 10-3 and 14-0 scores over St. Francis and Juniata, respectively, were the largest scores over the opposition. St. Francis met a second defeat, 2-1, and Clarion was edged, 7-6. Three of the losses were by narrow margins Juniata, 7-9; California, 3-4; and Shippensburg, 10-7. Millersville, 1-8; Clarion, 0-9; and Slippery Rock, 1-18; were the bleakest results of the campaign.

wrestling

Closing the season with a record of two wins and six losses, Coach Lewis ShaflFer's wrestlers took fourth place honors in the annual class "B" wrestling tournament at Lock Haven State Teachers College. Of the two wins, both were registered against Carnegie Tech in consecutive matches. Ed Branish pinned five men in varsity competition to emerge the top scorer on the mat roster. In the tournament, Indiana's second place win was accredited to Sam McClemens, Ed Branish, and "Jiggs" Cornell. All these men took second place honors. Marshall Policicchio, the local's 147 pound contender finished in first place, a state champion in his weight class. He went on to compete in the Tri-State Tournament.

Coach Ray Bernabei saw his scrappy, buf inexperienced, Indian soccer squad "boot" too many close ones last fall and end what could have easily been a 5-3-0 season with a 2-5-1 mark. The Braves whipped Kiski twice, 7-1 and 7-0; tied Grove City, 3-3; and lost to Slippery Rock, 4-0; to Frostburg, 6-2; to Grove City, 3-2; to Westminster, 1-0; and to Lock Haven, 5-2. Sam Thomas, Dave Rosenberg, Paul Perhosky and Bob Buchanan played their final season.

Meeting some stiff opposition during their season, Coach George Miller's swimmers won one and dropped five. They edged Kiski in the opening meet of the campaign, 28-24, and then lost to Edinboro, 6-23; to W and J, 17-64; to Slippery Rock, 11-73; to Carnegie Tech, 18-78; and to Grove City, 30-53.

Handicapped as in previous years by the inadequate surfacing of the tennis courts, Coach Trevor Hadley's racquet wielders managed to finish the campaign with two wins to their credit. golf

Highlighted by an invitation tournament at Juniata College, the Indiana golfers under the tutorship of Dr. Rhodes Stabley ended the season with an even break of five wins, five losses. Ed Matko, Bill Dickson, and Sonny Serene wound up their collegiate careers for the linksmen, who looked forward to an even more successful season in '52, what with a lot of ex- perience back in the fold.

Politicians discuss the state of the union.

Model promenades Mademoiselle fashions.

Now that the year is over, each of us can look back through collected dance programs, snapshots, and ticket stubs, and relive the personal high spots in its busy calendar. And if we compared notes, we'd find that some events ranked high on every list. Here on these pages, we have gathered photographs of a few highlights, but since we can't include a picture of each one, we'll begin at the beginning to refresh your memories with a written sketch. First of all came registration days, with the long queues in the gym and the hectic programming problems. Making out a schedule is one job that never becomes routine, no matter how many times you've struggled through it. "State of the Union," the Mademoiselle fashion show, and the senior "Foliage Festival" prom spotlighted the September social calendar. The campus ROTC unit received its flag on Memorial Field at the same time. Homecoming day, with the California game and the parade of floats, rang in October. The judges picked the Sigma Tau Gamma Showboat trophy winner this year, and Delta Sigma Chi won honorable mention.

Frosh caper during customs. Barter players interpret Shakespeare. ROTC unit receives colors. Masquers rehearse "Green Valley."

Panhellenic women dance to Baron Elliot's music. WSSF auction draws a crowd.

Sig Chi's float copped honorable mention at Home- coming. I

The first Cultural Life program, the Basque Singers, was followed by those memorable Freshman Customs days. "Grin and bear it" became the frosh byword then, and it's not such a bad motto for any of us. The Greek letter men and their dates swayed to Al Marco's music at the Interfraternity Dance in November; the Barter Theater players presented "Merchant of Venice," and then followed "Green Valley," the "heavenly" sophomore prom, and the Revlon clinic. December brought the soprano, Lucille Cummins, the Student Council Band Benefit Show, and the Christmas formal dinner and dance. This year's presentation of the Boar's Head Carol was the best ever, but then isn't it always? Dwight Cooke, commentator, was the Janu- ary Cultural Life selection, and "It's Laughter We're After" ended the month on a comedy note. Delta Sigma Epsilon's "Kaktus Kutups" captured the women's cup, and Sigma Tau Gamma took the men's cup with "The Maharajah Matriculates." (In January also came semester registration with more scheduling worries.) The Pittsburgh Symphony with Paul Paray conducting, the men's glee club concert, the freshman prom, "Coral Reef," and the Masquers' presentation of "Faustus" and "Gammer Gurton's Needle" filled February's calendar. Sorority women and their escorts visited the Mardi Gras at the Panhellenic Dance in March. Then in rapid succession came Spiritual Enrichment Week, the Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Chorus, the ROTC ball, and the annual Merchandise Fair. April brought the junior prom in an air of surrealism, and Easter Cantata Vespers, and then with warm weather came May and Swing Out weekend. "A Year and a Dame," an original musical comedy by two Indiana alumni, and the crowning of the May queen were highlights of the traditional celebration, which progressed with the usual round of alumni teas and banquets. Then on we went until finals, and now we're packing up with our heads full of plans for the summer. All in all, it's been a wonderful year, and one which we won't forget. Here's hoping this brief summary of events has accom- plished what it set out to do to keep the year 1951-52 a favorite for a long time to come.

Janet Pearce, the 1952 senior queen, and her court, reigned during the Swing Out celebration. Modern dancers dramatize a mood.

Successful community membership wherever we teach after graduation is the goal of our honorary education fraternity. Carrying out this aim were a series of social-cultural programs for interested students during the year. Included were a poetry hour, a concert, a trip to Buhl Planetarium, and an original play by a member of the group.

Membership includes juniors and seniors of high scholarship and service.

After one week of classes, the freshman women were caught in a whirl of coke dates, TP get-togethers football games, breakfasts, and spaghetti dinners that mean rush season. Since there are more fra- ternities on campus now than in previous years, rush- ing became much more intensive.

As a result, Panhellenic Association members met with Dr. Pratt and Student Council to work out a bet- ter program for the future. Rushing was confined to weekends for the remainder of the season, which ended with formal parties the week of October 22. Bidding took place October 29, after a "silent" weekend.

Interfraternity Council is composed of two members from each fraternity on campus, making a total of ten representatives. The dean of men, Walter M. Whitmyre, is adviser. Among the accomplishments of the council for the year were revision of the constitu- tion by-laws by a committee made up of one member from each fraternity, and several additions to rush- ing rules. The Interfraternity Dance in November, sponsored annually by the council, featured a Parisian theme. A member of each fraternity served as chairman for the various dance committees. Be- lieving fraternities to be an important part of campus life, we have directed our efforts toward improving our houses, to enable us to hold more open houses and parties next year. Through these and other activities, we hope to foster closer interfraternal relationships.

OR THS FIN8STIN YSARBOOKS...

Have you noticed how many colleges and universities are turning to Keller's for their yearbooks? Keller's refinement of the lithography method of printing, VELV ATONE, means more pictures, better layout design and needle-sharp fidelity in picture reproduction. Famous, too, are Keller's service or- ganization and creative team. A service representative will gladly call to discuss your yearbook plans.

student

What is it, this real and yet intangible thing called student life at Indiana? Many have waxed poetic about it; few hove succeeded in defining it, so we won't attempt to com- pose a definition that Webster would ac- cept. To our way of thinking, there is a sig- nificance in everyday happenings that can't be captured in mere words. Flash upon flash they come as we write frosh customs stub- bornly endured as the initiation to the cam- pus, the good-natured wisecracks about Ma Folger's cooking, weekly dances where ro- mances bloom, hours spent at Barclay's in deep discussion and companionship, Christ- mas and the Boar's Head Carol, the first snow and the tangled bus schedules, the squirrels in the oak grove, the dorm sere- nades. All these things and so many more. You fill in the gaps, you Indians. It's your life to live and to remember.

Modern artists act out "The Boxers."
