PREFACE

1

IT has been my endeavour, in the present work, to accomplish for my native county an undertaking of a unique character, namely, an absolutely complete record, within the compass of a single volume, of all its Visitation Pedigrees. For no English county has such a record ever yet been attempted.

I have shown myself quaHfied, I trust, for a task to which I have long looked forward, by my previous labours in similar fields, having edited in 1875 the" Visitations of Yorkshire made in 1584-5 and 1612,"— the largest and most complete Visitation volume that has yet issued from the press ('j ; and again, early in the present year, the " Vi_sitation_ of Middlesex began in 1663 " ; the only volume of printed Visitations which can claim to be taken from the original records in the archives of the College of Arms (D. 17).

I may at once proceed to give a brief account of the successive Visitations of the Palatinate, based on a paper in the Herald and Genealogist, vol. ii., 515, presumably from the pen of the late Mr. John Gough Nichols.

DURHAM.

1. In Tonge's Visitation of the Northern Counties, begun at Sir Bryan Stapylton's,

7 August, 1530, seven Durham pedigrees are included, viz., Brackenbury, Bulmer, Hedworth, Baron Hilton, Lumley Lord Lumley, Nevill Earl of Westmorland, and Tonge. This Visitation was edited by W. II. D. Longstaffe, Esq., for the Surtees Society, in 1863.

2. In the Durham Visitation made by William Flower, Norroy, and Robert

Glover, BortcuUis, in 1575, there are 56 pedigrees. The first entry is dated at Auckland, 29 July, and the last at Wynyard, 13 September. This Visitation was edited by Nicholas John Fhilipson, Esq., F.S.A.Newc.

3. In the Visitation of 1615, taken by Richard St. George, Norroy, and Henry

St. George, Bluemantle, there are 102 pedigrees. It was begun at the Widow Hudspeth's in the City of Durham, the order of Norroy to the Bailiff of Chester Ward bearing date 14 August, in that year (see pp. 342-4)- This Visitation was edited by Sir Cuthbert Sharp and J. B. Taylor, Esq., of Sunderland.

4. In the Visitation of 1666, taken by William (afterwards Sir William) Dugdale,

Norroy King-of-Arms, there are 62 pedigrees. This Visitation, unlike the others, has never yet been published. Its inclusion in the present work makes the collection perfect.

(1) "The labour must have been enormous, but SO was the love for it It is the most

perfect book of its kind within our knowledge, and we heartily wish Mr. Foster a reward commensurate with his very great merits." Notes &' Queries.

IV PREFACE.

Of the Visitation of 1615 thirty copies only were printed, but of the earlier Visitation of 1575, 140 or 160 copies are stated to have been struck off. From the disparity in the numbers, it may be inferred that the earlier Visitation was not a commercial success, nor is this to be wondered at when we reflect that it actually does not contain even a list of the pedigrees, much less a list of names, matches, or arms. A step in advance was, however, made in the later Visitation (1615), which boasts an alphabetical list of pedigrees.

Having regard, then, to the scarcity of these volumes, to their awkward size, and to the fact that they are practically unavailable by reason not only of their costliness (purchasers having to pay five or six guineas for each of them), but also because they have no indices, I decided to produce a working edition at a moderate cost, especially as I received encouragement from those whose help is of the greatest value and importance.

My ever-courteous friend, Edward Bellasis, Esq., Lancaster Herald, has allowed me to verify that part of the work which represents the important Visitation Pedigrees recorded by Dugdale in 1666, thus enabling me to include for the first time, as was my purpose, in one volume the whole of the Visitation Pedigrees of the county of Durham. I further had the good fortune, owing to the kindly feeling of the Fellows of Queen's College, Oxford, and to the cordial co-operation of my friend the Provost, to be allowed to collate the printed editions of the Visitation Pedigrees of 1575 and 1615 with the valuable manuscript copies now in the College Library (i). I was thus enabled to make numerous corrections and many important additions.

In this volume I have purposely discarded the Herald's Latin of Flower's Visitation, not only for the sake of securing uniformity, but also because I am in sympathy in this matter with Surtees, the most able of county historians (*). Therefore, as in my Yorkshire Visitations, " I have not adopted the time-honoured plan of reprinting a manuscript precisely as it has been transcribed, merely for the sake of recording the peculiarities, which generally mean the ignorance, of the scribe." As to the arrangement I have adopted for the pedigrees, it is based on the one object that I have kept steadily in view, namely, to produce a working volume, complete in itself, moderate in cost, and as convenient as possible for every-day use. It has been my endeavour to make the book one that shall be perfect of its kind, in illustration as well as in system, and I trust that my efforts in this direction may be approved by my local friends, as well as by my fellow-genealogists.

A peculiar interest attaches to these printed Visitations of the

(i) Queen's College Library contains a very numerous and interesting collection of genealogical and heraldic manuscripts {vide " Catalogue Codicum MSS. Coll. et Auli Oxon," by Rev. H. O. Coxc), bequeathed by Sir Joseph Williamson (Secretary of State, 1674-9 ; matric. from Queen's Coll., 18 November, 1650, as a servitor ; 15. A., 1654; M.A., 1657; cr. D.C.L., 27 June, 1674), who died 3 October, 1701, buried in Westminster Abbey. The chief point of interest in the copy of the 1575 Visitation is the form of verification at the foot of most of the pedigrees, and which are here i)rinted for the first time. This manuscript bears the name of William Bybey, 1649. The manuscript of the Visitation of 1615 contains the following inscription: "Bought of the daughter of Henry Lillcy, Rouge Dragon." Lilley died 19 August, 1638. Noble s College pj Arms, 250.

PREFACE. V

Palatinate because they were the first records of the kind ever published. That of 1575 was printed by S. Hodgson, of Newcastle, its preface being dated 10 April, 1820; and that of 1615 was printed in Sunderland (my native town) by T. Reed & Son, and must have followed very shortly, for it is reviewed in the Gcntlcmatis Magazine of September, 1S20, p. 250. Of the Visitation of 1575 the reviewer thus wrote :

" The publication of an entire Heraldic Visitation, uncombined with other matter, is a perfect novelty in the annals of genealogical literature." Gentleman's Magazine, July, 1820, vol. ii., p. 45.

These volumes were followed in the same year by an edition of the "Visitation of Middlesex, 1663," under the editorship of Sir Thomas Phillipps, Bart.

It may well be that the appearance of the earlier portions of Surtees' " History of the County" had aroused the genealogical spirits of the north, and led the editors of these Visitations to cause the respective Harleian manuscripts in the British Museum to be tran- scribed, and then to publish them at their own cost. Their publication evidently gave the cue to Sir Thomas Phillipps, which was in turn taken up by the Camden Society in 1849, by my relative the late J. G. Bell in 1853 (son of the late Thomas Bell, F.S.A., of Newcastle-upon-Tyne), by the Surtees Society in 1859, and the Cheetham Society in 1870, culminating in the formation of the Harleian Society (of which my friend the late Colonel Chester, D.C.L., was a founder) ; but even the Harleian Society has been unable to keep pace with the increasing interest in this branch of genealogical record, so that volunteers have swelled the ranks, and at their own cost and charge have edited and issued many additional Visitations, among whom will be found the names of Colby, Fenwick, Marshall, Metcalfe, Vivian, and Weaver, so that every English county has now, or will very shortly have, one or more of its Heraldic Visita- tions in print.

Having now stated the origin of printed Visitations, I may be excused from repeating my opinion on the merits of these records, as their value is fully understood by the well-informed (preface to Yorkshire Visitations, pp. vi. and vii. ; Herald and Genealogist^ vol. ii., p. 185) ; but I would take this opportunity of drawing attention to some noteworthy facts respecting the editors of these first-printed Durham Visitations.

Nicholas John Philipson (F.S.A.Newc), the first editor of a Visitation, " sailed as a merchant to South America, and died at St. Jago de Cuba, 29 April, 1822, and was buried in the Cathedral of that City." He was brother to Ralph Park Philipson, Alderman of Newcastle- upon-Tyne, sons of Nicholas Philipson, of Shield Field House, Newcastle, whose father John and grandfather Nicholas were yeomen of Broadwood, in the parish of Stanhope, co. Durham. Herald and Genealogist.

From the fact that Mr. Philipson's coat of arms appears in each Visitation, it may be inferred that he was the leading spirit in both publications, though the editors of the 161 5 Visitation are named as Sir Cuthbert Sharp, F.S.A., and J. B. Taylor, both Sunderland men by birth.

Sir Cuthbert Sharp (brother of Hercules Sharp, sons of Cuthbert Sharp, of Sunderland, shipowner, by his wife Susannah, sister of Brass Crosby, Lord Mayor of London, 1 770-1 ; M.P., Honiton, 1768-74 ; died

VI PREFACE.

14 February, 1793), born at Sunderland in 1781, was educated at Greenwich under Dr. Burney, having among his school-fellows Francis Lake, who became 2nd Viscount Lake and a Lieut.-General in the Army, and Edward, afterwards General Sir Edward Blakeney, G.C.B., G.C.H., K.T.S., Szc. Sir Cuthbert held a commission in a regiment of Fencible Cavalry during an Irish rebellion, 1799 ; he visited France shortly after the Peace of Amiens, 27 March, 1S02, but was detained a prisoner of war on the resumption of hostilities in 1S03. On his return to England several years after, he settled at Hartlepool, and was knighted 28 July, 1814, became INIayor, and during his year of office he published the " History of Hartlepool," reviewed in the Gcntlemaii s Magazine, 1816, i., 534. He devoted himself to compiling the pedigrees of the Minor Gentry in order to assist Mr. Surtees in that portion of his history of the county ; the initials C.S., surmounted by a rose, mark the pedigrees he compiled. Sir Cuthbert was collector of Customs at the port of Sunderland from 1S23 until 1S45, when he was promoted to the coUectorship at Newcastle, where he continued until his death, 17 August, 1849. Author of "Memorials of the RebeUion of 1569," and other works. See Gc7itlcinaiis ISIagasijic.

Of Sir Cuthbert's co-editor, John Brough Taylor, of Sunderland, surgeon, there is little to record beyond his marriage, 29 April, 1812, with Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Jonathan Midgley, Esq., of Newcastle, and his death in October, 1824.

I am proud to follow in the footsteps of these early pioneers, and to show that their spirit is not extinct among the sons of the county palatine. As it has been said {Impl. Diet, of Universal Biography) of my relative, Mr. Birket Foster, that he " belongs both by birth and training to the Newcastle School of Art, though for many years he has been a resident in London," so, under precisely similar circum- stances I deem it my greatest privilege to belong to the Durham School of Genealogy and Heraldry, now represented in the person of W. H. D. Longstaffe, Esq., the historian of Darlington.

It has been already shown that the first two Visitations ever published were printed at Newcastle and Sunderland respectively, and that the first editor, Mr. Philipson, came of a Durham family, though of Newcastle by birth, and that the other three editors were all Sunderland men born. Yet these names do not exhaust the list of Sunderland men who have done yeomen service for Heraldry and local History. I am just old enough to remember the venerable engraver of Fawcett Street, Thomas Robson (not to be confounded with the late Robert Robson, F.S.A.Newc), to whom we are indebted for the "British Herald "('), a fine armorial work and worthy of imitation.

The historians of Sunderland, too, are ever present to my mind's eye. How vividly I can recall old George Garbutt(-) in his quaint stationer's shop and lending library, the librarian also overhead of the Sunderland subscription library, where nearly thirty years ago my genealogical aspirations were strengthened and guided by a friend still living in the person of John Maude Ogden, Esq., of Sunderland.

(') The " British Herald ; or, Cabinet 'of Armorial Bearings of the Nobility and Gentry Great Britain and Ireland," by Xliomas Robson, Sunderland, 1830, 3 vols. 410. He' died 21 March, 1864, aged Si.

(-) " A Historical and Descriptive View of the Parishes of Monkwearmouth and Bishopwcar- moulh, and the Port and Borough of Sunderland," by George Garbutt, Sunderland, 1S19, 8vo. He died 28 November, 1859, aged 67.

PREFACE. Vii

Nor must I omit Jerry Summers ('), that erratic combination of town's busybody, local historian, and buffoon, who immortalised himself locally by upbraiding the apathy of the Town Councillors apropos of an additional grant for a free library in his pithy vernacular, " ye na n'owt, ye never did na n'owt, and ye never will na n'owt."

But here, I must draw to a close, with an apology for so garrulous a preface on the ground that such an opportunity of addressing the friends of one's youth occurs but once in a lifetime (-).
