Sue, popular and well liked by the students as well as the faculty has been an invaluable member of our staff since she began working here in 1958.

We, the seniors at Lebanon High School feel that we have been extremely fortunate in having Mr. G. B. Whited to guide us during our years at L.H.S. Through our association with him, our lives have been greatly enriched because of his interest in the student body, the help he has given us, and the good advice.

We shall all remember him as an inspiration and a model for our future. Mr. Whited has put the needs and problems of the students before his own personal wants.

He has shared with us our problems and our triumphs. Whatever we have achieved, we know that we owe much of the credit to the patience and understanding of our principal.

In the three years that he has been with us, Mr. B. O. Porterfield has been an important part of our faculty. He is assistant principal, teacher of biology, and is a great help to the students in the guid- ance department.

In a school, the bookkeeping is a big p r o b 1 e m . This problem falls on the shoulders of Mrs. Janette Wagoner, the head of our commerce department, and Miss Sue Holmes, our secretary.

We the Senior Class of 1960 are one of the smallest graduating classes in the history of Lebanon High School due to the change over from the eleven to the twelve year system. Although we are small, we are the largest graduating class in our county.

All the members of the Senior Class have worked hard to make our class one of the best to ever graduate from Lebanon. The seniors held a class picnic in May.

The Junior Class, the gradu- ating class of '61, represented Lebanon High School in many activities in which Seniors would ordinarily participate because of a small Senior Class. The Juniors are proud to have a large class to be the first class to be in the twelve year systems.

As a money- raising project, the Juniors sponsored the Val- entine Carnival. The Juniors gave the Seniors a Banquet and Prom using the theme "Hawaii". The Juniors are looking forward to their Senior year.

EIGHTH GRADE OFFICERS

The eighth graders began the school year wondering and waiting for the next experience they might have to undergo. The changing of classes, studying under six different teachers, exchanging books, and looks at lockers all be- came essential to the eighth graders routine. As the school year progressed the eighth graders found their place and participated in many school activities. The eighth grade party was a big excitement, crowning Sandra Clark Queen and Eugene Jones King. The decorations for the party were those used at the Junior-Senior Ban- quet and Prom.

Every member in Lebanon High School is a member of the Student Cooperative Association. The S.C.A. Council consists of the President, Vice-president, and Secretary chosen by the stu- dent body. Other members of the council are the editors of the school publications and the presidents of all classes, homerooms, and clubs.

This year the S.C.A. attended the district meeting at Garden. For the first time in the history of the school the district meeting will be held in our school next, year. The S.C.A. also sponsored the annual White Christmas Basket project and supervised the lunchroom during the lunch periods. During the summer the S.C.A. will send delegates to the Workshop at Radford, Virginia.

The Science Club is composed of students who are interested in science and who maintain a high scholastic average in science and mathe- matics.

In planning its programs the club officers and the program committee arrange a schedule of regular monthly meetings and present programs of scientific interest.

The projects this year included participating in several school campaigns and presenting pro- grams of interest to the entire student body. A new constitution was written and approved this year.

FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA

Tate Jackson, a future farmer, has a special interest in cattle.

The F.F.A. is made up of boys studying Vo- cational Agriculture in high school. Our goal is to prepare these boys to become better farmers of tomorrow. Not only are we trying to prepare these boys to be better farmers but to be the leaders of tomorrow. To increase the boys' knowledge of plant life they are taken on field trips.

Our first project was participation in the county fair by arranging an edu- cational booth exhibit. Individual exhibits by club members in food and cloth- ing were made. Other members of the club par- ticipated in a dress revue. Members of our club at- tended the District Feder- ation meeting.

This year, highlighted by winning a Southern Interscholastic Press Association Trophy Award, marked the most successful year in the publi- cation of the TRAIL BLAZER.

Increasing the circulation nearly three fold from an average of 175 copies per issue to 425, the newspaper has achieved tremendous strides in the circulation department and in the coverage of news and events at Lebanon High School.

All nine issues of the paper were designed to promote better cooperation among the students and faculty and provide a more favorable atmos- phere in which to work.

The Senior Tri-Hi-Y has been an active club this year. Eight dele- gates were sent to the district Hi-Y, Tri-Hi-Y meeting at Powell Valley High School; there delegates were sent to the Model General Assembly held in Richmond. At both Thanks- giving and Easter, programs were given for the student body. As a community service the club sold Easter lilies for the Crippled Child- rens Fund. As a school service the members took up tickets at the bas- ketball games. A dance was given by the club as a fund raising project and members sold nabs at lunchtime to raise additional money for the club.

The F.T.A. was one of the most active clubs in our school this year. If something important was to be done, you can bet your life the F.T.A. was up to it. They took over the nursery for P.T. A., thus making it possible for more parents to attend. They started a coat check for the bas- ketball games to insure the safety of peoples belongings while supporting their team. A tea was sponsored by the F.T.A. for the teachers during National Education Week. Five delegates were sent to the state convention at Roanoke, and get- well cards were sent faithfully to all m embers of the faculty who were sick. During their spare time they planned and participated in a Sadie Haw- kins Dance which was quite successful.

The Girls' and Boys' Varsity Clubs are composed of those students who have received school letters during the previ- ous school year.

The clubs sponsored the sale of ice cream during lunch. Pro- ceeds were used in purchasing athletic equipment for the gym. Members of the Girls' Varsity decorated the goal posts of the football field before each home game during the season.

The Lebanon High School Chorus is a credit course, meet- ing daily as a class. It is open to anyone interested in singing and music participation.

More interest has been shown in choral activities this year than we have had in recent years. The choir sang for the District K teacher's meeting, the Christmas pageant, and this year presented the spring con- cert without the help of the band; thus proving that the singers are able to stand on their own feet.

LEBANON HIGH SCHOOL BAND

The Lebanon High School Band has been one of the most active bands in our area. Our band played at all the football games during the season. We participated in the Burley Tobacco Festival, the Lord's Acre Parade, the Jaycee Christmas Parade, the Vinton Dogwood Festival, the District VII Band Festival, and the Southeastern Band Festival. In the Southeastern Band Festival, we re- ceived a II rating. We received the First-place award at Vinton. Jennie Lou Pruner played at All- State Band at Radford. Our majorettes will attend the Southeastern Star and Twirling Camp at Con- cord College this summer. The band will hold summer rehearsals this year. Band Camp will be held during August; our band will participate in this. The majorettes practiced hard and faithful during the year so that they might add color and precision to the band. This was the first year that our major- ettes have had acrobatic major- ettes. They have added new life to the group. The majorettes performed during many of the half-time ceremonies of the football games. We can very well be proud of our basketball team; they won fifteen games and lost only one in the district. We are first in the district. We are very proud of the fact that we tied Abingdon for the Sportsmanship Award, but we had played one game less than Abingdon. This has been one of the Pioneer's best seasons.

Delegates to Boy's State: Joey Gillespie and Larry Hall represented Lebanon at Boy's State held in Blacksburg, Virginia in July, 1959.
